    NHL hockey back in Broad Street Bullies days was completely different today. The game was slow as hell. Full of stoppages.....low glass, cover ups, three line passes and corner stalemates all led to a shitload of faceoffs and a game that went zone to zone. The rules today has led to a game led by puck moving dmen back then it was mostly dump and chase. If you go on YouTube and watch an NHL game from the 70s, its like a different sport.

    Add to that. They didn't condition like they do today. Maybe a few, but most relied on talent or their fists and used camp to get in shape.

    I am of the opinion that overall yes you need a true legit #1 guy. There will always be exceptions though.

    The league has much more advanced defensive systems now than in the 70s & 80s, which makes having good puck moving defensemen more important. They are basically equivalent to guards bringing the ball up the court and need to be able to handle pressure and trapping.
