Union Crushed In Crucial Season Finale
By Philly Sports Daily Staff
The Unionís dream of an Eastern Conference title died on the table at Red Bull Arena on Thursday night, as the teamís worst-case scenario was played out for the season finale in a 1-0 loss to the New York Red Bulls.
With an opportunity to battle Sporting Kansas City for the top seed in the East, the Union faltered under an eighth-minute header goal from quick striker Dane Richards. The Union, who now have to wait and see if they land in the wildcard round or with a loss or draw by the Houston Dynamo, earn a bye as a top-three seed, struggled to muster any offense and crumbled under the speed of the Red Bulls offense.
The lone bright spot for the Union in the loss was a strong night by goalie Faryd Mondragon, who made multiple eye-popping saves early, keeping the Union without armís length in the contest. But despite their proximity on the scoreboard, the young Union were unable to strike or sustain any amount of offensive possession with little to no shots on frame in the second half and just one in the opening 45 minutes.
