• Phillies shut out in brutal loss in Houston

HOUSTON – The Phillies were shut out by the worst team in baseball Saturday night. They got nothing going against a rookie lefthander who entered the game 1-7 with a 5.35 ERA. They went 0 for 10 with runners in scoring position and left 12 men on base.

The embarrassing 5-0 loss to the Houston Astros bruised the Phillies’ fragile postseason chances and left manager Charlie Manuel frustrated and searching for words.

“A night like tonight kind of … I … you know what … it’s unreal,” he said.

Not really. The Phillies’ offense has gone into lulls where it can’t deliver base-runners for two years now. They have gone into another at a most inopportune time as they make a bid for the second NL wild-card spot. The Phils have lost two of the first three games of this crucial four-game series in Houston. They lost, 6-4, on Thursday night, leaving 11 men on base in a 2-for-9 effort with runners in scoring position.
